Eco-friendly living without the overwhelm

There’s absolutely no shortage of advice out there (especially on social media) on how to reduce waste and avoid plastic 🌎 …which is fantastic! Thank goodness people care about this, and we’re all trying to do better.

Sometimes, though, it can feel like there’s so much to do, and that if you’re not doing everything, you’re doing nothing. And that’s simply not true.

Living in an environmentally friendly way doesn’t have to be extreme, expensive or perfect. It’s really about the small steps that feel doable for you. Little changes add up to something big. 💚

So, if you’ve ever thought “I want to live more sustainably, but where do I even start?”, this one’s for you.

Start where you are

You don’t need to invest in a compost bin, stop using a car, or throw away everything plastic in your home to care about the environment. 🌱 Maybe your first step is using a reusable water bottle. Or thrifting instead of buying fast fashion. Or trying out a plant-based meal.

There’s no gold star for doing it all—just real impact from doing something. Start with one or two things that feel manageable. Then, build from there.

Eat with the earth in mind

Here’s a crazy (but true!) fact:

The food industry (especially animal agriculture) is responsible for about a third of all greenhouse gas emissions—more than all forms of transportation. That means meat and dairy is responsible for more pollution than all cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined. 🤯

The good news? Simply adjusting your meals is one easy way to work towards a happier planet:

🥕 Adding more plant-based meals into your week will have a huge impact.
🛒 Buy local or in-season when you can.
🥡 Cut down on food waste by using leftovers or freezing extras.

Every time you eat with a little extra thought, you’re helping reduce pollution, save water, and protect natural resources. 🌎💕

Be smart with what you already have

Eco-friendly doesn’t always mean buying more “green” products. In fact, one of the best things you can do for the planet is to use what you already own. 🧤

That might mean:
♻️ Fixing things instead of tossing them
👕 Thrifting or swapping clothes with friends
🛋️ Giving your stuff a second life (like turning an old t-shirt into cleaning rags)

The truth is, reusing and repurposing are super sustainable—and often way easier on your wallet, too.

Use less plastic without the stress

We know—plastic is everywhere. It can be exhausting.

Start with small swaps:

🪵 Choose items that are packaged in glass or paper over plastic, or are made from non-toxic alternatives (e.g. hemp sponges and wooden cutting boards over plastic ones)
☕️ Carry your own water bottle or reusable coffee mug
🍎 Look for produce that isn’t unnecessarily wrapped in plastic
👗 Choose clothes that are made from natural materials, like cotton and linen, instead of polyester, nylon, acrylic, etc. (or choose thrifted clothing!)

Generally, the best thing to do when you’re shopping is to ask yourself: does this really need plastic? If not, try find a version of it that doesn’t have it. ☺️

Do what you can

No one is perfect—it’s okay to use a plastic fork at a cookout or forget your tote bag once in a while. 🌤️

Also: this doesn’t all fall on you. When we zoom out, less than 60 rich, powerful companies produce 80 percent of all global CO2 emissions. This fact makes a lot of what’s happening to the planet feel like it’s outside our individual control, and to some extent, that’s true. ☹️

That doesn’t mean that taking steps in the right direction isn’t important! By making small adjustments on the personal level, you’re choosing not to support the system that’s allowed these businesses to pursue profit over taking care of this amazing planet. 🌳🌻

The goal isn’t to be a perfect eco-warrior. It’s to do what you can, when you can. Even one small change is a step in the right direction. You’re allowed to go at your own pace. You’re allowed to start small. And you’re absolutely allowed to feel proud of every step you take.
