How to keep your HIV care on track when you move

Moving to a new city or town is a big deal! 🎉 New adventures, new places to explore, maybe even a fresh start. But with all the excitement, there’s one thing you don’t want to overlook—your HIV care. 🤗

The truth is, not all healthcare is created equal, and depending on where you move, access to quality HIV care can vary. That’s why it’s so important to plan ahead and make sure your care stays on track.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about keeping your HIV care seamless when you move.

Plan before the move

Before you start packing those boxes, take a little time to map out your healthcare situation. A few things to start with:

Talk to your HIV doctor – let them know you’re moving! They may have recommendations for doctors or clinics in your new area. They can also help transfer medical records and make sure you don’t run out of meds during the transition.

Research HIV clinics in your new area – Not all places have the same level of care. If you’re moving to a big city, you’ll likely have more options, but if you’re heading to a smaller town, you might need to scope out the closest major city for the best treatment. Websites like HIV.gov or local health departments can help you find nearby providers.

Check your insurance coverage – Moving states? Your health insurance might change, too. Your new plan could cover HIV care, medications, and doctor visits at specific clinics or hospitals. If you don’t have insurance, investigate programs like the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which helps people get the HIV care they need.

Refill your meds before moving – The last thing you want is a lapse in your medication schedule. Try to get an extra supply just in case it takes time to set up care in your new area.

Make the transition smooth

Once you’ve moved, getting set up with a new HIV clinic should be a priority (yes, even before finding the best pizza spot in town 🍕). Here’s how to make the transition as smooth as possible:

📄 Transfer your medical records – Ask your previous doctor to send your records to your new HIV clinic. This saves time and ensures you don’t have to repeat unnecessary tests.

📞 Book an appointment – Even if you’re feeling great, don’t wait! Establishing care early ensures you have a provider who knows your history and can support you when you need it.

🏥 Find a support system – Adjusting to a new place can be overwhelming. Look for local HIV support groups or online communities (like Positive Peers!) to connect with others who understand your journey.

What if you’re moving somewhere with limited HIV care?

Here’s the reality: high-quality HIV care isn’t available everywhere. If you’re moving to a smaller town or rural area, you might need to travel to a nearby city for the best doctors, specialists, and resources. While this can be frustrating, knowing where to go and who to contact ahead of time can make a huge difference.

If in-person care is tough to access, consider telehealth options! Many HIV specialists now offer virtual visits, allowing you to stay connected with expert care no matter where you are.

Stay in control of your health 💆

Moving is a fresh start, but your health remains a top priority. By planning ahead, staying proactive, and making connections in your new area, you can keep your HIV care running smoothly—no matter where life takes you.

And remember, you’re not alone in this! If you’re looking for a supportive space where you can connect with others, find resources, and get real advice, Positive Peers is here for you. 💞
